Symptoms
- Visitors say the site looks "fine" but nobody remembers it
- You see the same layout on competitor sites
- Stock or AI images that could be from any company
- Three or four different button styles on one site
Why it happens
AI design tools learn from what already exists, so they produce the middle of the road. Soft gradients, rounded cards, the same few fonts, a smiling person at a laptop.
None of that is wrong. It is just not yours. Good design starts with decisions about your business: who you serve, how you want to sound, and what one thing people should remember.
Try this first
-
Pick two typefaces and stick to them
One for headings and one for body text is enough. Choose them because they fit your business, not because they were the default. Use them on every page.
-
Pick a small color palette
Choose one main color, one accent and a few neutrals. Write down the exact codes. Remove every color that is not on the list.
-
Set a spacing system
Use the same few spacing sizes everywhere, for example 8, 16, 24, 48 and 96 pixels. Uneven spacing is one of the clearest signs of an AI layout.
-
Use real images
Photos of your work, your place and your people do more than any stock or AI image. If you cannot shoot photos yet, use simple graphics instead of fake scenes.
-
Give the site one memorable element
A strong headline style, an unusual color, a hand-drawn detail. One clear choice beats ten small effects.
When to stop and call a person
Bring in a designer when the site is your main sales channel, when you need a full redesign, or when you are not sure what makes your business different. A designer can turn your answers into a clear visual system.
Questions people ask
Do I need a full redesign?
Not always. Fixing fonts, colors, spacing and images on the existing layout can change how a site feels a lot.
Is a template always generic?
A template is a starting point. It stops looking generic once your own type, colors, images and words go in.
