AI content and SEO: what actually gets sites in trouble

Google does not punish content for being written by AI. It punishes content for being useless. Here is the difference, and what it looks like on real sites.

There is a lot of fear and a lot of bad advice about AI content and search. Some people say Google can detect AI text and will bury you. Others say it does not matter at all. Neither is quite right.

What Google has said

Google’s public position is that it rewards helpful content, no matter how it is made, and that using automation mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. In other words, the tool is not the problem. The purpose and the quality are.

What we see on sites that lost traffic

The sites we review after a drop usually share a few patterns. None of them is “used AI once”.

  • Volume over value. Hundreds of posts published in a few months, many on topics the site has no real experience with.
  • Look-alike pages. Several articles answering the same question in slightly different words, competing with each other.
  • Nothing new. Posts that summarize what already ranks, without a single example, test, photo or opinion of their own.
  • No one behind it. No author, no about page, no sign that a real person or business stands behind the advice.

What works instead

Sites that use AI well treat it as an assistant, not as the writer. The AI helps with outlines, first drafts and editing. The person adds the parts only they have: experience, real numbers, screenshots, mistakes and opinions.

A simple test: if your page disappeared, would anyone miss it, or would the next result say the same thing? If they would not miss it, the page needs work, no matter who wrote it.

If you already published a lot

Do not panic and do not delete everything. Sort your pages into four groups: keep, improve, merge and remove. Improve the pages that already show up in search, merge the overlaps with redirects, and remove what has no purpose. Then publish less, and better.

Recovery takes months, not days. Our guide on traffic drops after AI content has the step by step version. If you want help, see AI SEO recovery.
