Symptoms
- Search traffic fell sharply around a Google update
- Many posts get no clicks at all
- Several articles cover the same topic in slightly different words
- Posts read smoothly but say nothing new
Why it happens
Google looks at your whole site, not only single pages. When a big part of a site is thin, repetitive or written mainly to rank, the whole site can lose ground. That includes your good pages.
AI makes it easy to publish hundreds of posts that look fine and add nothing that other pages do not already say. The fix is not more content. It is less content, made better.
Try this first
-
Export your page data
In Search Console, export clicks and impressions for every page over the last 12 months. Add the publish date and a rough word count for each page.
-
Sort every page into four groups
Keep pages that get traffic and help readers. Improve pages that get impressions but few clicks. Merge pages that cover the same topic. Remove pages with no traffic and no clear purpose.
-
Redirect what you merge or remove
When you merge or delete a page that has links or a bit of traffic, add a 301 redirect to the best related page. Do not send everything to the home page.
-
Add what only you can add
Rewrite the pages you keep with real experience: your own tests, photos, numbers, examples and opinions. Show who wrote the page and why they know the topic.
-
Publish less
From now on, publish a page only when it answers a question better than what is already out there.
When to stop and call a person
Get a person for this when the site has hundreds of pages, when your income depends on search, or when you are not sure which pages to cut. Removing the wrong pages can make things worse, so a careful audit by an SEO specialist pays for itself.
Questions people ask
Does Google ban AI content?
No. Google says it cares about whether content helps people, not how it was made. The problem is content that is thin or made mainly to rank.
How long does recovery take?
Usually months. Sites often see changes after Google crawls the improved pages again and after later core updates.
