Moving your Wix site to WordPress without losing rankings

Your Wix AI site has outgrown the builder. You can move to WordPress and keep your search traffic, as long as every old address points to the right new page.

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Time: A few days for a small site

Symptoms

  • You need features Wix cannot do well
  • You want full control over code, hosting or SEO
  • Your old Wix pages already get some search traffic
  • You are worried about losing rankings during the move

Why it happens

Wix does not have a one-click export to WordPress. Pages, posts and images need to be moved, and the new site will use different addresses for many pages.

Search rankings belong to addresses. If an old address stops working, its rankings fade. If it sends visitors to the matching new page with a 301 redirect, most of the value carries over.

Try this first

  1. List every old address

Open your Wix sitemap, usually at /sitemap.xml, and export your top pages from Google Search Console. Put all addresses in one spreadsheet.

  2. Build the new site on a temporary address

Set up WordPress on a staging address. Move your content page by page and improve it while you are at it.

  3. Map old addresses to new ones

In the spreadsheet, write the new address next to every old one. Wix blog posts often live under /post/, and WordPress posts usually do not, so most of these need a redirect.

  4. Add 301 redirects

Add every redirect from your map using a redirect plugin or the redirect tool in Rank Math or a similar SEO plugin. Send each old page to its closest match, not to the home page.

  5. Switch the domain and watch

Point your domain to the new host, submit the new sitemap in Search Console and check the Pages report for errors over the next few weeks.

When to stop and call a person

Get a specialist for this if the site gets meaningful traffic or leads. A migration done in a rush can cost months of rankings. A planned one usually keeps them, and often improves them.

Questions people ask

Will I lose rankings when I move?

A small dip for a few weeks is common. With proper redirects, most sites recover and often grow, because the new site is faster and better structured.

Do I need a Change of Address in Search Console?

Only if the domain changes. If you keep the same domain and only move platforms, redirects and a new sitemap are enough.
