Symptoms
- The same error comes back after every fix
- The Agent rewrites parts that used to work
- Your credits are going faster than expected
- You are no longer sure which version worked
Why it happens
When an AI agent cannot find the real cause of a bug, it tries the next most likely fix, then the next one. Each attempt changes more code, which creates new problems to fix.
The way out is the same for every AI tool: go back to what worked, describe the problem precisely, and ask for one small change at a time.
Try this first
-
Stop and roll back
Replit keeps checkpoints of your app. Roll back to the last one where the app worked, instead of asking for another fix on top of a broken state.
-
Describe the bug precisely
Tell the Agent what you did, what you expected, what happened instead and the exact error text. Vague requests lead to guessing.
-
Ask for an explanation first
Before any fix, ask the Agent to explain what it thinks is causing the bug. If the explanation does not make sense, the fix will not either.
-
Give it one task at a time
Ask for a single change and test it before the next one. Name the file or feature you mean.
-
Keep a backup outside Replit
Connect the project to GitHub and save a version every time something works. Then you always have a way back.
When to stop and call a person
Bring in a developer when the same bug survives several rounds, when the app has real users waiting, or when nobody knows which version last worked. A person can usually find the root cause faster than more Agent runs, and for less than the credits you would burn.
Questions people ask
Is it the Agent's fault?
Partly. Agents struggle with bugs that need context they cannot see. Clear descriptions and small steps make a big difference.
Should I start a fresh project?
Usually not. Rolling back to a working checkpoint is faster and keeps your progress.
